This wall depicts the small house that served as the first convent for the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, rendered from a sketch in the Archives. Rev. Mo. Teresa O'Neil, foundress of the Congregation, sits outside.
The sisters' first ministry was to educate the Catholic youth of Allegany, NY. From those humble beginnings, the sisters rapidly expanded their education ministry throughout the Eastern United States, Jamaica, Brazil, and Bolivia. This wall pays homage to all of our sister teachers.
In 1883, the sisters were called to take on the management of a hospital in New York City. Over the next 75 years, the sisters managed hospitals in the United States and Brazil, serving as nurses, administrators, and lab technicians. They also established and managed health clinics in Jamaica and Brazil. This wall, titled "Bless the Work of Our Hands," illustrates the uniquely Franciscan touch that the sisters bring to compassionate healthcare.
